The AHS Local Historical Societies committee will be hosting a breakfast roundtable session for history and cultural organizations on Thursday, September 16th from 7am to 8am at the Golden Bear Restaurant (at the Wedgewood Resort). This is an opportunity for the local organizations around the state to come together at the annual conference and exchange ideas, news, challenges and success stories. You may remember sharing stories over pizza in Juneau, quiche in Homer and continental breakfast in Anchorage. We encourage folks to bring copies of membership brochures, recent newsletters or other publications to share. Everyone is welcome. The Golden Bear Restaurant will have a breakfast buffet available for purchase – cold buffet for $8.95 and hot buffet for $13.95. Please help us spread the word by sharing news of this event with individuals and organizations in your communities.

Two weeks to go!

The final countdown has started - two weeks to go until our big meeting in Fairbanks. There is still time to register and reserve a hotel room at the Wedgewood Resort. There are rental car discount rates also.

Your local host committee is busy putting the final touches on arrangements, getting your conference bags printed (they're gorgeous!), finalizing the schedule and implementing some changes from the draft schedule... all things to make the conference a great experience for everyone!

Fairbanks weather is cooperating as the birch and aspen trees are starting to turn a lovely shade of golden yellow, the highbush cranberry and fireweed is starting to turn a deep scarlet... the skies are that special shade of blue that you only find in Fairbanks. Mornings are crisp, afternoons warm - the perfect combination to feel energized!

The on-line registration form is now active so let the registrations begin! You will see that the Host Committee decided to try and make everything as inclusive as possible - 2 full breakfasts, one lunch, and two evening receptions are included in the price of the registration. One optional evening reception and one lunch-on-your own for those who want a bit of freedom from the conference crowds.

For those who prefer the hard-copy form of registration, we're working on getting the final edits done and those will go in the mail in the next couple of weeks. You always have the option of registering on-line at www.museumsalaska.org and then sending a check to the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society. Check out your options! The Museums Alaska session abstracts and schedule are also posted, so you can get a sense of what we'll be presenting - AHS abstracts to be posted soon.

Early-bird registration is good through July 31 and then the rates increase by $25. The Wedgewood Hotel will hold our block of rooms until August 1, and then the special rate will be given out as rooms are available - our reservation code is MUSEUM1. Museums Alaska website is up to date!

The Museums Alaska website now has the basic information about the conference! Head over to www.museumsalaska.org to get the draft schedule, read abstracts of Museums Alaska sessions, and to get the details about traveling to Fairbanks as well as making hotel reservations.

Your Host Committee is working hard at making arrangements for evening events that will prove to be memorable and fun!

We've welcomed Camilla Kennedy, a UAF economics major taking a senior seminar on Civic Engagement and Leadership. She's helping out with fundraising and will be getting her feet wet with each of our subcommittees. Several other UAF students will join Camilla and the rest of the Host Committee during the conference to help guide our attendees and make it an exciting time. We'll be posting info to the Blog, Facebook group and we'll be setting up a Twitter account for updates and comments on sessions!

Registration will go live around July 1 so keep your eyes open for either an email or mailing. We'll have both online and paper-based registration options available.

Our next Host Committee meeting will be the 22nd of June at 1:00 at the Wedgewood for a re-acquainting tour!

WELCOME!
This is our new official site for keeping track of the comings and goings related to the 2010 Joint Annual Conference of Museums Alaska and the Alaska Historical Society. The members of your Fairbanks Host Committee invite you to share your comments about our fair city and what you're looking forward to as we develop the events and schedule for what promises to be an excellent conference.

If you don't already know, the dates of the conference are Sept. 15-18, 2010. The meetings will be held at the Wedgewood Resort (http://www.fountainheadhotels.com/wedgewood/wedgewood.htm), which is also the home of the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum.

For Facebook users, we have a Group set up to keep track of what is going on, so join us there as well.

Museums Alaska program committee is working on developing some excellent sessions surrounding our theme: "Reflection and Renewal." Our keynote speaker has been confirmed as Bernice Joseph, UAF's Executive Dean of the College of Rural and Community Development and Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education.

Alaska Historical Society has a call for papers out, on the theme: "Energizing Alaska." These are due May 15, 2010 to Ross Coen, Conference Planning Committee:ross.coen@alaska.edu. See www.alaskahistoricalsociety.org for the full call for papers. The keynote speaker for AHS has been confirmed to be John Bockstoce, former Curator of Ethnology at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and author of numerous publications, including most recently, Furs and Frontiers in the Far North: The Contest Among Native and Foreign Nations for the Bering Strait Fur Trade.

Our local host committee is being managed by members from the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society and the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

We look forward to keeping you up-to-date on registration information and all other technical aspects of the conference.
